Frequently Asked Questions

What is After Therapy Thoughts?

After Therapy Thoughts is a structured reflection journal originally designed around the space between therapy sessions.

At its center is a thoughtfully curated 12-session sequence that helps you hold onto what happened in session, notice what comes up afterward and throughout the week, capture thoughts and experiences as life happens, notice the good, and consider what you want to carry forward.

Alongside those repeating session sections are evergreen spaces for what you're learning about yourself—patterns, triggers, supports, relationships, questions, insights, and other things worth knowing and remembering.

The result is more than a place to take therapy notes. Over time, it becomes a record of what you're noticing, learning, working through, and changing.

Do I need to be in therapy to use it?

No. After Therapy Thoughts was intentionally designed with therapy in mind, and that's where its structure comes from. But the underlying practice—paying attention to your experiences, noticing patterns, understanding yourself, remembering what helps, and recognizing what's going well—can be useful outside of therapy too.

If you're not currently in therapy, the session-based sections can still serve as structured reflection points rather than therapy-session records.

How is the journal meant to be used?

If you're using After Therapy Thoughts alongside therapy, begin a new session section with each therapy session and move through the pages that follow as your week unfolds.

The structure creates continuity between sessions: what happened in the room doesn't have to disappear once you leave it. There's somewhere to capture what stayed with you, what you noticed later, what happened in real life, what helped, what felt difficult, what went well, and what you may want to return to next time.

The evergreen sections can be revisited throughout the journal as you learn more about yourself.

You don't have to write in it every day. The structure is intentional; the expectation of perfect consistency isn't.

What happens after the 12 sessions?

The 12-session structure is designed as a complete cycle of reflection. By the end, you'll have more than individual entries—you'll have a record you can look back through to notice connections, recurring themes, changes, progress, and things you've learned about yourself along the way.

How is this different from a regular journal or therapy notebook?

A blank notebook can hold what you already know you want to write down. After Therapy Thoughts helps you notice what may be worth paying attention to in the first place.

Its sections were intentionally created to hold different parts of the process: what happens in therapy, what surfaces afterward, what you notice in everyday life, patterns and triggers, things that support you, questions you want to return to, progress, and good things that are easy to overlook.

That structure helps individual thoughts and experiences become something you can return to and learn from over time.

Why pen and paper?

The analog format is intentional.

Writing by hand creates a different kind of experience from quickly putting something into a phone. It asks you to slow down, choose your own words, and spend a little time with what you're thinking—without notifications, algorithms, or predictive text competing for your attention.

After Therapy Thoughts was designed to create that small pocket of space.

Is After Therapy Thoughts a replacement for therapy?

No. After Therapy Thoughts is a reflection tool, not therapy, mental health treatment, or a substitute for professional care.

It can be used alongside therapy to support reflection between sessions, or independently as a structured way of paying closer attention to yourself and your experiences.

Do I have to fill out every page?

No.

There is an intentional order and purpose to the journal, particularly when it's being used alongside therapy. But that doesn't mean every prompt will be relevant every week or that every space needs to be filled.

The goal isn't to complete the journal perfectly. It's to use the structure to help you catch and return to what matters.

What if I miss a week?

Come back when you're ready.

After Therapy Thoughts isn't built around streaks, dates, or daily completion. Missing time doesn't put you “behind.” Simply continue with the next session or reflection when it makes sense.
